
Brigadier General (Prof.) S. M. Shakhwat Hossain is a Surgeon specialising in hepatobiliary and laparoscopic surgery, with more than three decades of service in the Bangladesh Army Medical Corps (July 1993 – August 2025). He completed his MBBS from Mymensingh Medical College, earned his FCPS in Surgery from the Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons (BCPS) in 2003, and holds a Diploma in Hepatobiliary Surgery from the Second Military Medical University, Shanghai, China. He served as Head of the Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery at Combined Military Hospital (CMH), Dhaka from 2008 until 2025, and as Advanced Specialist and Acting Chief Surgeon General at CMH Dhaka in his final rank of Brigadier General. His training includes two years at the Eastern Hepatobiliary Surgery Institute in Shanghai, one year of on-the-job hepatobiliary training at BIRDEM, Dhaka, and advanced laparoscopic surgery training in Singapore. He is an examiner for MBBS, MCPS and FCPS examinations and has authored or co-authored 17 publications. He has extensive surgical experience, including approximately 20,000 major surgical procedures, about 15,000 laparoscopic surgeries, about 500 Whipple procedures and more than 1,500 hepatobiliary surgeries.
